1) Remove items that cannot tolerate heat.

Items such as aerosols, pressurized cans, flammable liquids, solvents, explosives, ammunition, candles, oil paintings, musical instruments, make-up, medications, and VCR tapes should be removed from the heating area. 2) Place other items in the refrigerator.

Items such as chocolate (and other foods that will melt), fresh produce, and medicines that can be refrigerated should be stored in the refrigerator until after the heat treatment is concluded. This ensures that these substances will not be ruined.

3) Store other liquids in the bathtub.

All other liquid that will remain in the house should be placed in the bathtub or shower because they could leak or break from the heat. Valuable liquids such as perfumes should be boxed and removed (see step 1).

4) Unplug all electronics.

This will allow the heat to penetrate into interior spaces providing to ensure that no bed bugs are missed.

5) Take down wall-mounted pictures.

As with unplugging electronics, taking down wall-mounted items allows heat to affect all surfaces of house and contents.

6) Secure knick knacks

Powerful fans are used to circulate the heat to all areas of the house so nothing should be left free to blow around. Knick knacks can be knocked off shelves by the force of the circulating air so anything that you do not want broken should be secured or perhaps placed on the floor. Tall, skinny objects should be placed on the floor on their side so they don’t blow over and break.

7) Place loose paper in a box.

Any papers left loose are sure to be carried around by the powerful fans used to circulate the heat to all areas of the house. Flying paper causes a mess and can be potentially hazardous in that it could come in contact with the heaters and combust.

8) Drain waterbed or airbed

The high heat can cause the contents of waterbeds and airbeds to expand which can cause damage or leaks in these pieces of furniture. It is highly advisable that both types of beds be drained to avoid future problems.

9) Remove all trash

All trash should be bagged, sealed, removed from the house, and placed in a metal or plastic dumpster.

10) Empty and open all suitcases.

Suitcases are potential hiding places for bed bugs so it is important that they be subjected to the same amount of heat as everything else. This is especially important as the bed bugs may have made their way into your home from somewhere else. As such, we ask that you empty all suitcases and set them out in the open position so the heat can penetrate to all crevices.

11) Stow area rugs

Area rugs and all other unsecured floor coverings should be rolled up and stood on end. This allows the heat to reach the maximum surface area.

12) Remove other living items.

Make sure all plants, pets, and fish are removed from the premises prior to the heat treatment. Just like you and me, these living things can’t tolerate the high temperatures associated with this method of bed bug extermination.

13) Laminates can be damaged

Laminated furniture (and laminates in general) can be damaged by the high heat so be prepared for the possibility. To prevent this damage, take these valuables with you or remove them to an outdoor location.

14) Increase in electric bill

Because of the heaters and fans incorporated to kill the bed bugs, a moderate increase in your electric bill will occur.
